Overland Park Firefighters & Paramedics

Accredited

August 15, 2013 the Overland Park Fire Department became an accredited agency through the Center for Public Safety Excellence. The process involves a comprehensive self-assessment and professional peer evaluation that enables organizations to examine past, current, and future service levels and internal performance and compare them to industry best practices. The process is intensive and required the dedication of many. Congratulations to all the IAFF Local 4818 members who made this accomplishment possible.

Important Call for Action!

Kansas House Bill 2123 is CURRENTLY under consideration and is by all accounts a direct attack on public sector unions like ours. The so called "Public Employee Freedom Act" would not only strip any collective bargaining rights, but it would also disallow members to choose the payroll deduction of union dues or fees from their pay checks. In other parts of our country this has been a very effective tactic in depowering and defusing union representation.

Read this bill in its entirety. It is imperative that you directly contact your state representatives to voice your opposition regarding this pending bill as it is CURRENTLY under debate. Your representatives need to know immediately just how you feel. If you have questions about your representative or how to contact them, use the “find your elected officials” tool on the left side of this page.

In a time where we are in a constant battle to defend our personal rights, it is clear that despite it’s name, this bill is aimed to take away the few “freedom’s” related to your membership in this local. This is our time to take a stand, take the time to become educated and let your elected officials know exactly how you feel on this important legislation.

Smoke Alarm Safety at Home

Fire Safety Week is October 7-13. IAFF Local 4818 reminds you to regularly test smoke alarms and to replace the batteries at least 2 times each year. Here are a few other important tips.

• INSTALL smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement.

• Larger homes may need ADDITIONAL smoke alarms to provide enough protection.

• For the best protection, INTERCONNECT all smoke alarms so when one sounds they all sound.

• An IONIZATION smoke alarm is generally more responsive to flaming fires and a PHOTOELECTRIC smoke alarm is generally more responsive to smoldering fires. For the best protection, both types of alarms or combination ionization and photoelectric alarms (also known as dual sensor alarms) are recommended.

• Smoke alarms should be INSTALLED away from the kitchen to prevent false alarms. Generally, they should be at least 10 feet (3 meters) from a cooking appliance.

• REPLACE all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

Local 4818 Members Host 2nd Annual Boot Block for MDA

Members of Local 4818 partnered with the Professional Paramedics of Johnson County, IAFF Local 4885 in collecting donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association during the weekend of September 7th and 8th. Members “filled the boot’ at the Rosanna Square Shopping Center at 119th and Blue Valley Parkway on both Friday night and Saturday morning. The event, originally planned for Labor Day weekend, was postponed one week due to rain.

The IAFF and MDA have a 58 year history and the IAFF remains the top fund raiser in finding a cure for muscular dystrophy. Over the past two years, the work of Local 4818 members has raised nearly $5000 for the MDA. This year s fundraiser will be included in the projected $28.6 million donated by IAFF affiliates from across the U.S. and Canada in 2012. The funds will allow MDA to continue funding worldwide research to find treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy and related diseases.

Standing With Scranton

Local 4818 found itself on the front lines standing with the members of Scranton, PA IAFF Local 60 for an important victory in July. Firefighters in Scranton had been in a battle with the city’s mayor since July 6, when nearly 400 City workers received their paychecks. Instead of receiving their full wages, pay was based on minimum wage – just $7.25 per hour.

While attending the 51st IAFF Convention in Philadelphia, IAFF General President Harold Shaitberger called for Alternates to pack two chartered buses headed to Scranton. More than 100 firefighters joined Local 60 to hold a rally outside the Lackawanna County Courthouse calling on Mayor Doherty to obey the law. VP Drinkard, along with several other Johnson County IAFF locals, joined the many brothers and sisters across the country to show our support for the firefighters of Scranton.

“The members of Local 60 stood together and sent their mayor a strong message," said IAFF General President Harold Schaitberger. "This union and our brothers and sisters stepped up during our convention and joined them at their rally in Scranton to let Mayor Doherty know that if you mess with one of us, you’re messing with all of us.”

Eventually a settlement was reached July 31st requiring the City of Scranton to reimburse firefighters after the mayor’s illegal decision earlier in the month to cut their pay to minimum wage. Under the terms of the three-page settlement agreement, the city must pay employees the wages- plus 6 percent interest- that were withheld by August 17.

GoMobile with UnionCentrics

UnionCentrics is pleased to announce a brand new website feature. "GoMobile" allows UnionCentrics customers to provide critical information to the ever growing Internet capable mobile phones.

Previously, if a member, resident or elected official were to visit your website they were forced to view contents that were designed to fit on a desktop/notebook computer monitor onto a 2.5 inch cell phone screen. Our new upgrade has resolved this issue by automatically detecting when a cell phone or other mobile internet device is attempting to connect to your website and instantly delivering a perfectly formatted website.

This new upgrade is an ideal solution for Locals that are looking to provide a mobile/cellular compliant micro website which can provide content apart from your homepage.

Benefits for your membership include providing convenient access for your members to view Union related information such as upcoming meetings, union alerts, or even a shift calendar.

There are also many benefits that GoMobile can do for your political campaigns, community advocates and residents who visit your website from their cell phone.
Essentially, the GoMobile upgrade allows you to have two separate websites themes, one designed and dedicated for mobile visitors and one for people using a desktop/notebook computer. Both themes are managed from your existing website admin console.

Check out http://www.unioncentrics.com/ on your mobile phone to experience GoMobile!
